The Apoyeque lagoon, situated within a deep crater, is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its history of violent eruptions, the last of which occurred around 50 BC. In contrast, Lake Xiloá is a popular recreational destination for locals, known for its clear waters and unique species of endemic cichlid fish. The peninsula's landscape consists of dry tropical forest, providing a refuge for various bird species, iguanas, and small mammals amidst the urban expansion of the surrounding region.
