Old Cathedral of Managua (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The Old Cathedral of Managua, officially the Cathedral of Santiago, is a monumental ruin that symbolizes the fate of the Nicaraguan capital. It was built between 1928 and 1938 and is distinguished by its steel frame construction, which was imported from Belgium. The neoclassical design was one of the most advanced in Central America at its time. During the devastating 1972 earthquake, the interior of the cathedral was severely damaged, but the outer structure remained miraculously standing while the rest of the city center collapsed into rubble. Due to structural instability, entry into the ruin is currently prohibited, but it remains one of the country's most photographed landmarks. The cathedral stands silently in the Plaza of the Revolution, serving as a reminder of the grandeur of old Managua before the disaster. In recent years, conservation efforts have been undertaken to prevent further deterioration of the facade. At night, the building is effectively illuminated and serves as a backdrop for state ceremonies.
