Sacred Heart Church (Malta)

Weather…

The Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fontana, Gozo, is a significant religious monument whose foundation stone was laid on January 29, 1904. The building was consecrated just one year later, on January 29, 1905, although the completion of its intricate details took several more years. The construction was spearheaded by the local priest, Giuseppe Hili, who successfully mobilized the community to fund and support the ambitious project. The architecture follows a classical style, featuring a prominent facade and an elegant dome that overlooks the fertile valley below. Inside, the church houses the titular statue of the Sacred Heart, which was crafted in Marseille, France, in 1923. In 1911, the church was officially elevated to parish status, solidifying Fontana's identity as a distinct community. The interior is adorned with works by the renowned Maltese sculptor Wistin Camilleri. Today, the church remains the spiritual heart of the village, particularly during the bustling feast celebrated every June.
