Ghadira Nature Reserve (Malta)

Weather…

Ghadira Nature Reserve is Malta's premier wetland area, located at the head of Mellieħa Bay in the northern part of the main island. Spanning roughly seven hectares, the reserve consists of brackish lagoons, reed beds, and salt marshes that form a unique coastal ecosystem. Managed by BirdLife Malta, the site is a critical stopover and refueling station for migratory birds traversing the Mediterranean between Europe and Africa. More than 200 bird species are recorded here annually, with regular sightings of black-winged stilts, Kentish plovers, and various egrets. The habitat was formally protected in the 1980s following an intense environmental campaign to save the marshes from encroaching tourism development. A dedicated visitor centre provides ecological insights and features observation hides that allow for unobtrusive birdwatching. The reserve also supports rare salt-tolerant flora and endemic plant species. Its successful ecological restoration serves as a model for nature conservation efforts within the Maltese Islands.
