Fort Chambray (Malta)

Weather…

Fort Chambray is a bastioned fortification located on the island of Gozo, overlooking the Mġarr Harbour. It was commissioned by the Order of St. John in 1749 and largely financed by the French knight Jacques François de Chambray. The fort was designed to serve as a new citadel for the island, providing a refuge for the population in the event of an invasion. During the French occupation in 1798, it was the site of minor resistance before the island's capitulation. In the 19th century, the British converted the fort into a military barracks and later a hospital with a capacity for 250 beds. The fortification features impressive ramparts, a polverista (powder magazine), and various underground cisterns. In recent decades, parts of the interior have been redeveloped into residential units, though the historic outer walls and gate remain largely intact.
