Colbeck Castle (Jamaica)

Weather…

Colbeck Castle is an imposing ruin located in the parish of St. Catherine, near Old Harbour. Built around 1680 for Colonel John Colbeck, who arrived in Jamaica with the invading British army in 1655, it is one of the largest and most ambitious structures from the early colonial period. The "castle" is actually a massive fortified Great House designed in a symmetrical Palladian style, featuring four rectangular corner towers with slit windows for defense. The structure was built using local limestone and imported bricks, with walls that remain remarkably intact despite the lack of a roof. Covering an area of approximately 27 by 24 meters, the building was intended to serve as a fortress against potential Spanish counter-attacks or Maroon raids. Although never fully completed as a residence, the sheer scale of Colbeck Castle provides evidence of the immense wealth and military mindset of the early British settlers who established the plantation economy on the island.
