Old Iron Bridge, Spanish Town (Jamaica)

Weather…

The Old Iron Bridge in Spanish Town is a marvel of early industrial engineering, spanning the Rio Cobre at the eastern entrance to the town. Erected in 1801, it is the oldest cast-iron bridge in the Western Hemisphere and one of the first of its kind in the world. The bridge was designed by Thomas Wilson and cast in sections at the Walker & Company ironworks in Rotherham, England, before being shipped to Jamaica. It has a single arched span of approximately 25 meters, supported by massive stone abutments. The bridge was built to provide a reliable crossing over the river, which frequently flooded and washed away previous timber structures. Its elegant, filigree-like ironwork represents the cutting-edge technology of the Industrial Revolution. Although it has been closed to vehicular traffic for decades due to structural concerns, it remains a protected National Monument and a significant landmark for those interested in the history of civil engineering and colonial infrastructure.
