The building's architecture is characterized by its wide, wrap-around verandas and high ceilings, which were designed to maximize natural ventilation to help combat yellow fever and other tropical diseases that plagued the Royal Navy. After its closure as a hospital, the building served as a police station for many years. Today, it houses the Port Royal Archaeological Museum and several research laboratories, displaying a vast collection of artifacts recovered from the "sunken city" that was submerged in 1692, making it a central hub for maritime history.
