Hatvan is a historic town located in Heves County, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Budapest, situated along the banks of the Zagyva River. Its name literally translates to sixty, which according to local tradition, marks its distance from the capital. Due to its strategic geographical position, Hatvan has served as a vital transportation hub and river crossing for centuries. The town most prominent landmark is the Grassalkovich Mansion, an impressive Baroque palace built in the 1750s, which now houses the Széchenyi Zsigmond Hunting Museum. The town industrial development peaked in the late 19th century as it became a central node in the Hungarian railway network. Hatvan is also historically noted for the 1849 Battle of Hatvan, where Hungarian revolutionary forces secured a significant victory. Today, the town remains an important regional center, balancing its rich architectural heritage with modern industrial parks and logistics facilities.
