Gyöngyös is situated at the pretty southern foot of the Mátra Mountains and is widely regarded as the gateway to the range due to its strategic location. The town's history stretches back to ancient times, and it was officially granted royal town status in 1334 by King Charles Robert, fueling its growth as a trade hub. A defining moment in its modern history was the devastating fire of 1917, which led to an extensive reconstruction of the city center in neoclassical and eclectic styles. The Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew stands as a major architectural landmark, housing one of Hungary's most valuable ecclesiastical treasuries with rare medieval goldsmith works. Gyöngyös is also the historical center of the Mátra wine region, world-renowned for its white wines cultivated on rich volcanic slopes. The Orczy Palace houses the Mátra Museum, which features extensive natural history exhibits, including a rare and complete mammoth skeleton. Today, the town is a lively cultural and educational center, serving as a primary base for hikers exploring the nearby Kékes peak.
