Eger is a historic city at the foot of the North Hungarian Mountains, world-renowned for its Baroque architecture, its fortress, and its wine production. Its most glorious historical event was the siege of 1552, when a small group of Hungarian defenders led by István Dobó repelled a massive Ottoman army. In the city center stands the Basilica, Hungary's second-largest church, and nearby is the 40-meter-high minaret, the northernmost monument of the Ottoman era in Europe. Eger is a stronghold of Hungarian viticulture, and the Valley of the Beautiful Women is the place to taste the famous Egri Bikavér and other local specialties. The city also features several thermal and Turkish baths that utilize the hot waters rising from the depths. As an educational hub, the prestigious buildings of the Eszterházy Károly University dominate the cityscape. Eger strengthened its tourism profile around wine culture (Bull's Blood, Szépasszony Valley) and its baroque old town in 2024-2025. Ákos Vágner (Fidesz) became mayor after the 2024 local election.
