Szigetvár is a city of profound historical importance in southern Hungary, gaining international fame for the heroic siege of 1566. During this conflict, the fortress captain Miklós Zrínyi and his small band of soldiers defended the stronghold against the massive Ottoman army led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Although the defenders eventually perished, their fierce resistance effectively halted the Ottoman advance toward Vienna, and the Sultan himself died of natural causes during the siege. The present-day fortress complex features impressive ramparts, the Miklós Zrínyi Museum, and the former Mosque of Sultan Suleiman, which was later converted into a Catholic church. Nearby, the Hungarian-Turkish Friendship Park stands on the site where the Sultan's heart is believed to have been buried. Beyond its military legacy, Szigetvár features modern thermal baths supplied by mineral waters drawn from a depth of over 600 meters. The town hosts annual commemorative events, such as the Zrínyi Days, which feature spectacular historical reenactments. The architectural landscape of the town center reflects a unique blend of Ottoman influences and Baroque-era reconstruction.
