Zsolnay Cultural Quarter (Hungary)

Weather…

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs is an outstanding example of the repurposing of a former industrial site into a cultural hub. It is located on the grounds of the world-famous Zsolnay porcelain factory, which achieved international renown in the 19th century under the leadership of Vilmos Zsolnay. The five-hectare area was fully renovated as part of the 'Pécs - European Capital of Culture 2010' project. Visitors can admire the characteristic pyrogranite ceramics and the iridescent eosin glaze that decorate many buildings and fountains throughout the quarter. Today, the site houses museums, exhibitions, a planetarium, a puppet theater, and departments of the University of Pécs. Particularly noteworthy is the Zsolnay Mausoleum, the final resting place of the family, located on a nearby hill. The quarter combines industrial history with contemporary art and serves as a symbol of the city's innovative spirit.
