Barcs is a significant border town in Somogy County, situated on the left bank of the Drava River in southwestern Hungary. First mentioned in 1389, the town saw substantial growth during the 19th century when the arrival of the railway and the expansion of steam shipping on the Drava transformed it into a trade hub. The town serves as a key gateway to the Danube-Drava National Park, preserving pristine riverside landscapes and unique aquatic habitats. One of its architectural highlights is the Late Baroque Roman Catholic Church, which dominates the town square. Barcs is also well-known for its medicinal thermal bath, featuring waters rich in sodium hydrogen carbonate. As a border settlement facing Croatia, the town facilitates significant international traffic and serves as a vital administrative and educational center for the surrounding rural districts.
