In summer the southern Hungarian spa town celebrates its healing thermal waters with concerts, gastronomy and family programmes.
Harkány is a world-renowned spa town in southern Hungary, situated at the base of the Villány Mountains and famous for its unique sulfuric medicinal waters. The therapeutic properties of the water were discovered by chance in 1823 when a laborer noticed that his chronic joint pain improved after working in the local marshlands. The mineral water in Harkány is distinctive for its high carbonyl sulfide content, which is absorbed through the skin and respiratory system far more efficiently than other sulfur compounds, aiding in the treatment of musculoskeletal and skin disorders. The Spa and Beach complex is set within a sprawling 13.5-hectare park, featuring modern therapeutic centers and numerous outdoor leisure pools. The town is characterized by its mild Mediterranean climate, tranquil parks, and proximity to the prestigious Villány wine region. Cultural sights include the Reformed Church and the Catholic Church, the latter adorned with intricate Zsolnay ceramics. As one of Central Europe's most significant health resorts, Harkány attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually for both medical rehabilitation and recreational wellness. Its location near the Croatian border also makes it an important cultural and economic gateway.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
