Pécs, located in southwestern Hungary at the foot of the Mecsek Mountains, is a city with a 2,000-year history and remarkable cultural diversity. Founded by the Romans as Sopianae, it is home to an Early Christian Necropolis dating back to the 4th century, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city's architectural landscape is shaped by various eras, featuring the grand Pécs Cathedral and the former Mosque of Pasha Qasim, which now functions as a Catholic church, a symbol of the city's complex Ottoman history. Pécs is also the site of Hungary's oldest university, founded in 1367. The world-famous Zsolnay Porcelain Factory, known for its colorful ceramics decorating many local buildings, originated here and continues to define the region's artistic heritage. In 2010, Pécs served as the European Capital of Culture, highlighting its role as a major hub for art, music, and education. Its Mediterranean-like atmosphere, animated squares, and rich historical monuments make Pécs one of Hungary's most attractive travel destinations. In Pécs, Attila Péterffy (independent, opposition-backed) was re-elected mayor in 2024. The city continued to build its cultural and university profile around the UNESCO-listed Early Christian necropolis.
