Habitation Bellevue (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation Bellevue was a magnificent estate in northern Saint-Domingue, renowned in the 18th century for its extensive terraced gardens and its commanding position over the coastal plain. The name 'Bellevue' reflects the extraordinary view that allowed planters to monitor activities in the port and on neighboring fields. Economically, the habitation was a major producer of indigo and sugar, employing the most modern techniques of the time. During the Haitian Revolution, the property became a site for significant political meetings, as its location offered both protection and oversight. Following the victory of the revolution, the land was redistributed under the reign of Henri Christophe and served as an example for the agricultural reorganization of the young state. Today's ruins, especially the remains of the manor house and slave quarters, are vital testaments to the social structure and aesthetic preferences of the colonial elite, as well as the subsequent liberation.
