Habitation des Lauriers (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation des Lauriers, situated in the hills above Cap-Haïtien, gives a deep insight into the colonial plantation history of northern Haiti. This former estate was a significant center for coffee cultivation and other export goods in the 18th century, which made Saint-Domingue France's wealthiest colony. The architecture of the ruins displays the typical layout of a plantation, with the manor house in a prominent position surrounded by the remains of processing facilities and slave quarters. Following the outbreak of the Haitian Revolution in 1791, the property became a site of intense fighting, as the north was the epicenter of the uprising. The plantation's location provided a strategic overview of the Bay of Cap-Haïtien, making it militarily interesting as well. Today, the location is known for its panoramic views and serves as a site of remembrance for the dark chapters of slavery as well as the triumph of freedom. The integration of the ruins into the modern landscape makes Habitation des Lauriers an important destination for cultural tourism and historical research in the region.
