Fort Bambou was a strategic defensive installation on the northern coast of Haiti, built to secure the bay against hostile fleets. During the colonial period, it served to protect the valuable plantations in the hinterland from British and Spanish attacks. The construction combined local materials with European fortification architecture, giving the fort its characteristic name. During Haiti's wars of independence, the fortress played a crucial role in repelling French attempts at reconquest. The cannon batteries were positioned to control a wide area of the coastal strip effectively. Today, only foundations and wall remnants remain, providing insights into 18th-century military organization. Its location on a hill offered defenders an excellent overview of the sea and surrounding terrain.
