Set elegantly along the banks of the Zwickauer Mulde river, Glauchau gracefully unfolds the proud splendor of past centuries. Once a flourishing center of the textile industry and a noble residence, the city is famous for an architectural rarity that is virtually unique in Saxony: the imposing Double Castle (Doppelschloss). This massive complex consists of the late-Gothic Hinterglauchau Castle, which today houses an engaging museum of art and local history featuring authentically preserved noble chambers, and the adjoining Renaissance Forderglauchau Castle, noted for its highly pretty inner courtyard. A stroll through the expansive Gründelpark with its idyllic Swan Pond provides a lush green oasis of tranquility right in the middle of the city. Those who take on the challenge of climbing the 46-meter-tall Bismarck Tower will be rewarded with a sweeping panoramic view sweeping across the foothills of the Ore Mountains. The historic weavers' settlement (Webersiedlung) still bears witness to the golden era of the textile trade, when Glauchau fabrics were highly sought after far beyond the country's borders. During the summer, the atmospheric castle courtyard regularly serves as a spectacular backdrop for lively open-air concerts and historical markets.
