Leipzig Zoo was founded in 1878 and today follows the 'Zoo of the Future' concept, which combines education with near-natural animal husbandry. A central element is Gondwanaland, one of Europe's largest tropical experience worlds, where a tropical rainforest with over 17,000 plants has been created under a massive glass dome. This hall is home to around 170 animal species that can be discovered on foot or by boat. Another significant facility is Pongoland, a globally unique competence center for great apes. The zoo is divided into various themed areas such as Africa, Asia, and South America, each reflecting specific ecosystems. With projects like the Elephant Temple Ganesha Mandir, Leipzig sets standards in modern husbandry. The historic building fabric was skillfully integrated into the new experience worlds, preserving the character of the traditional city zoo.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
