The Völklingen Ironworks in Saarland is a globally unique industrial monument and was once one of the most important ironworks in Europe. Founded in 1873, the facility was continuously expanded for over a century until its closure in 1986 following the global steel crisis. As the only completely preserved ironworks from the golden age of industrialization, it became the first industrial site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. The site features massive installations such as the giant blast furnaces, the blower hall, and the sintering plant, which are now utilized for cultural purposes. Visitors can explore an extensive circuit to understand the technical processes of pig iron production and climb to the charging gallery at a height of 45 meters. The area known as 'The Paradise,' formerly an industrial zone, now demonstrates how nature reclaims man-made structures. Today, the Völklingen Ironworks serves as a lively venue for exhibitions, concerts, and the study of industrial history.
