Merzig, often proudly referred to as the "City of Wolves," is picturesquely situated on a wide bend of the Saar River and is widely famous for the Werner Freund Wolf Park. In this fascinating and freely accessible wildlife reserve, packs of wolves from various continents live in spacious enclosures, allowing visitors to safely observe these majestic predators up close. Beyond its wildlife, Merzig is the undisputed capital of "Viez," the traditional and somewhat tart Saarland apple wine. The town is surrounded by expansive orchards, and travelers driving along the scenic Viezstraße (Apple Wine Route) can stop at rustic taverns to taste this refreshing regional specialty. Another highlight for those seeking relaxation is the "Garden of the Senses" (Garten der Sinne) atop the Kreuzberg; this beautifully landscaped park features themed garden rooms designed to engage sight, smell, and touch. The historical town center is dominated by the impressive Church of St. Peter, the only fully preserved Romanesque basilica in the entire Saarland.
