Völklingen is undoubtedly one of the most famous cities in Saarland, a reputation it owes primarily to its colossal industrial heritage. The Völklingen Ironworks (Völklinger Hütte) is the only fully intact ironworks in the world from the golden age of industrialization; designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it now serves as a profoundly fascinating cultural and exhibition center. Exploring the dark labyrinth of massive iron pipes, climbing high up to the viewing platform of the blast furnaces, or walking through the cavernous blower hall is a dramatic experience that makes the raw power of historical steel production remarkably tangible. Yet, Völklingen has much more to offer than just raw industrial steel. The architecturally striking Huguenot Church in the city center and the impressive Old Town Hall testify to the town's rich civic history. For nature lovers and cyclists, the city acts as an excellent starting point for exploring the highly scenic river landscapes of the Saar. The well-paved towpath along the river invites relaxing bike tours all the way to the famous Saar loop or straight into neighboring France, making Völklingen a brilliantly multi-layered destination.
