Dillingen an der Saar is a lively town where an impressive industrial legacy meets serene river landscapes. The town is most famous for the Dillinger Hütte, one of Europe’s oldest continuously operating steel plants; this colossal facility still shapes the region's economic identity, and guided tours offer visitors an awe-inspiring look into the sheer scale of modern heavy industry. The defining architectural landmark of the town, however, is the Saardom (Parish Church of the Holy Sacrament). With its massive proportions and striking twin towers, it is one of the largest churches in Saarland and is frequently compared to grand French cathedrals. History buffs should also take time to explore the Altes Schloss (Old Castle), a pleasant historical estate that now serves as a bustling cultural venue. Beyond its industrial and architectural highlights, Dillingen's prime location on the banks of the Saar River provides excellent recreational opportunities. The well-paved Saar cycle path invites long, scenic rides along the water, while the nearby Ökosee (Eco-Lake) acts as a tranquil sanctuary for walkers and birdwatchers, blending steel tradition with green retreats.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
