Saarlouis was founded in 1680 by King Louis XIV of France as a fortress city to militarily secure newly acquired territories along the Saar River. The renowned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban designed the settlement as a symmetrical hexagon, the basic structures of which remain clearly visible in the city's layout today. Often referred to as the 'secret capital' of Saarland, the city maintains a distinct French flair, particularly evident in its gastronomy and local lifestyle. The historic casemates, once vital components of the defensive fortifications, now house a variety of restaurants and cafés that attract lively crowds, especially during the summer months. The 'Großer Markt' (Great Market) forms the heart of the city and was originally conceived as a parade ground for royal troops. Despite its military origins, Saarlouis has evolved into a significant economic hub and a highly desirable place to live. Every year, the 'Emmes' festival, the largest urban celebration in the region, draws tens of thousands of visitors to its historic old town.
