The Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen, once the largest and most powerful hard coal mine in the world, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001. The 100-hectare site is considered a masterpiece of modern industrial architecture and was predominantly designed by architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer in the Bauhaus style. The iconic double-trestle winding tower of Shaft 12, erected in 1932, is now the landmark of the entire Ruhr area. Following its closure in 1986, the site transformed into a major cultural and design hub, housing institutions such as the Ruhr Museum and the Red Dot Design Museum. Visitors can tour the authentically preserved surface facilities along the 'Monument Path' and trace the journey of coal from extraction to processing. The integration of industrial history, architecture, and contemporary art has made Zollverein a symbol of the structural transformation of an entire region.
