Wuppertal is a major industrial city in the Bergisches Land region, formed in 1929 through the merger of several towns including Barmen and Elberfeld. Its world-famous landmark is the Schwebebahn (suspension railway), which entered service in 1901 and spans 13.3 kilometers. Topographically, Wuppertal is defined by its location in the narrow valley of the Wupper river and the surrounding hills, resulting in a very green cityscape with numerous parks and forests. Historically, the city was a center of the textile industry and the birthplace of Friedrich Engels, a co-founder of Marxism. The Von der Heydt Museum houses one of the Rhineland's most significant art collections, with a focus on Expressionism. Another highlight is the Wuppertal Zoo, one of Germany's oldest and most scenic zoological gardens. Due to the steep terrain within the city limits, Wuppertal features an unusually high number of public stairways. Today, the city is evolving into a modern center for design and sustainable development.
