The Gasometer Oberhausen is one of Europe's most striking industrial monuments and a defining landmark of the Ruhr area. Built between 1927 and 1929, it functioned for decades as a storage facility for blast furnace gas and later coke oven gas before being decommissioned in 1988. Standing 117.5 meters tall with a diameter of nearly 68 meters, its vast interior space has unique acoustics and a monumental atmosphere. Since its conversion into an exhibition hall in 1994, the Gasometer has evolved into a nationally renowned cultural center. It has hosted spectacular installations by artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, alongside massive thematic exhibitions focused on space, oceans, and nature. A glass panoramic elevator takes visitors to the top, where an observation deck provides sweeping views across the industrial landscape of the western Ruhr region. It is now a primary anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Trail.
