Hamm belongs to the league of Westphalian Hanseatic cities and celebrates with large city festivals downtown. Visitors enjoy stages, markets and cultural programmes around the medieval Hanseatic tradition.
Hamm is situated on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area and has evolved from a major coal mining hub into a diverse cultural and leisure destination. Its most famous landmark is the Glass Elephant in Maximilian Park, a 35-meter-high walk-in sculpture created from the former coal washing plant of the Maximilian Colliery. This elephant, the largest of its kind in the world, now houses a tropical palm garden and provides panoramic views of the redesigned park grounds. The city is shaped by the Lippe River and the Datteln-Hamm Canal, making it a key inland shipping port and a favorite spot for riverfront cycling. In the city center, the historic Pauluskirche stands as a testament to Hamm's medieval past. Another unique site is the Sri-Kamadchi-Ampal Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in Europe, which draws thousands of pilgrims annually. Hamm perfectly illustrates the successful structural change from heavy industry to a green city focused on science and recreation.
