Highlights of 2026

Gelsenkirchen, once famously known as the "city of a thousand fires," was a major center for coal mining in Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the city is globally recognized primarily for its football club, FC Schalke 04, whose Veltins-Arena is considered one of the most modern stadiums on the continent. Structural transformation in Gelsenkirchen is particularly evident in Nordsternpark, a former colliery site that was redesigned for the 1997 Federal Horticultural Show and now blends leisure with industrial culture. Another highlight is the Zoom Erlebniswelt, a modern zoo that presents animals in spacious, near-natural habitats. The Musiktheater im Revier is architecturally one of Germany's most significant post-war theater buildings. Despite the economic challenges following the end of coal mining, the city has evolved into a hub for solar energy and innovative services. Gelsenkirchen proudly preserves its mining identity, which is reflected in numerous monuments and museums. The Schüngelberg settlement is a prime example of traditional miners' garden city architecture. Gelsenkirchen's Arena AufSchalke was one of ten Euro 2024 host venues, staging four matches including England v Serbia. FC Schalke 04 continued to play in the 2. Bundesliga in 2024-2025.
