Krefeld, historically renowned as the "City of Velvet and Silk," fascinatingly combines rich industrial heritage with outstanding modern architecture. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the textile industry brought immense wealth to this city on the left bank of the Lower Rhine, a prosperity still clearly visible in its stately urban villas. An architectural highlight of global significance are Haus Lange and Haus Esters, two adjoining brick villas designed in the late 1920s by Bauhaus pioneer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Today, these clean-lined modernist buildings serve as excellent museums for contemporary art. A striking contrast to this avant-garde design is found in the historic district of Linn. Here, the formidable Burg Linn stands as one of the oldest and best-preserved moated castles in the region, complete with thick defensive walls and a beautiful surrounding English landscape park. The castle complex also houses a hunting lodge and the fascinating German Textile Museum, which honors Krefeld's deep-rooted weaving history. For nature lovers, the Krefeld Zoo and the expansive Stadtwald (City Forest) with its boating lake and cozy beer gardens offer wonderful ways to unwind. The city presents a highly dynamic blend of Rhenish industrial culture, high art, and ample green spaces.
