Barra de Santiago (El Salvador)

Weather…

Barra de Santiago is a significant estuary and wetland located in the Ahuachapán Department of western El Salvador, near the border with Guatemala. The protected area covers approximately 11,592 hectares and was designated as a Ramsar site of international importance in 2014. The region is characterized by extensive mangrove forests that provide a complex ecosystem for numerous marine and terrestrial species. It serves as a critical nursery for fish and crustaceans, as well as an important nesting site for endangered sea turtles, particularly the Olive Ridley turtle. The geography is defined by the convergence of freshwater river inflows and the Pacific Ocean, creating a dynamic brackish water system. In addition to its ecological role, the area supports eco-tourism and artisanal fishing, which are central to the local economy of the surrounding communities.
