Concepción de Ataco, commonly known as Ataco, is a lively mountain town located in the Sierra Apaneca-Ilamatepec range of the Ahuachapán Department. Founded by Pipil tribes in the pre-Columbian era, its name translates to "Place of Elevated Springs." The town is world-famous for its colorful murals that adorn the walls of almost every building in the central district, depicting local traditions, nature, and daily life. Like its neighbors on the Flower Route, Ataco's economy revolves around the cultivation of gourmet coffee, and the town is home to several historic "beneficios" (coffee mills) where visitors can learn about the production process. The central park is the heart of social life, featuring a statue of the Virgin of the Conception and surrounded by artisanal craft shops. The town's cool climate and traditional festive atmosphere make it a favorite destination.
