Vega Real Valley (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Vega Real Valley is the eastern and most fertile section of the Cibao Valley in the northern Dominican Republic. Its name, meaning 'Royal Valley,' was bestowed by Christopher Columbus, who was struck by the lushness and beauty of the landscape when he first saw it in 1494. The valley extends from the city of Moca in the west to Samaná Bay in the east. Thanks to its thick layers of dark, organic-rich soil (vertisols), it is ranked among the most productive agricultural zones in the world. The Yuna River serves as the vital water source for the region, enabling large-scale production of rice, cocoa, and tobacco. The valley is not only the economic heart of Dominican agriculture but also a cultural hub with deep historical roots stretching back to the earliest European settlements and the indigenous cacicazgos.
