Falconbridge Nickel Mine (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Falconbridge Nickel Mine, locally known as Falcondo, is located near Bonao in the Monseñor Nouel province. Since beginning production in 1971, it has been one of the most important players in the Dominican Republic's mining sector. The mine extracts nickel from laterite ores using open-pit mining methods. The extracted ore is processed in an on-site metallurgical complex into ferronickel, an alloy of iron and nickel used worldwide in stainless steel production. Economically, Falcondo contributes significantly to the country's gross domestic product and export earnings. The company also operates its own oil-fired power plant and a pipeline from the Port of Haina to meet the high energy demands of the smelting process. Despite temporary shutdowns due to global market price fluctuations, the mine remains an essential employer and economic factor for the central region of the country.
