Baitoa is a young and emerging municipality in the Santiago province, officially established on January 2, 2016, by Law 69-16. It is located south of Santiago de los Caballeros and is bounded by the Yaque del Norte River, which shapes its geographic profile. The economy of Baitoa is unique as it is heavily based on mining, particularly the extraction of calcium carbonate and limestone for the construction industry. In addition to mining, small-scale farming plays a role, with corn, tobacco, and fruits being grown for local consumption. Geographically, the municipality features a hilly topography, interspersed with dry forests and river valleys. A prominent issue and, at the same time, an identity-defining factor for the community was long the lack of running water, which led to strong civic cohesion and the founding of local citizen initiatives. Today, Baitoa strives for sustainable development and the expansion of basic infrastructure for its approximately 12,000 residents.
