Concepción de La Vega, commonly known simply as La Vega, is the capital of La Vega Province in the central highlands of the Dominican Republic. The city traces its origins back to 1494 when Christopher Columbus founded the original settlement of La Vega Vieja to facilitate gold mining in the region. Following a catastrophic earthquake in 1562, the town was moved to its current location along the banks of the Camú River. Today, La Vega is internationally famous for its Carnival, one of the oldest and most spirited in the Americas, attracting thousands of tourists every February with its iconic 'Diablos Cojuelos' characters. Economically, the city is an agricultural powerhouse, serving as a primary hub for rice, cocoa, and tobacco production. The historic ruins of Old La Vega and the nearby Santo Cerro sanctuary remain significant cultural landmarks, preserving the city's status as a site of historical and religious importance.
