La Isabela Historical National Park (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

La Isabela Historical National Park marks the site of the first official European settlement in the Americas, founded by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage. The settlement was established on the banks of the Bajabonico River in the Puerto Plata province and named after Queen Isabella I of Spain. The archaeological site includes the remains of Columbus's house, the first church in the New World, and a fortified campsite. Despite its strategic location, the settlement was abandoned by around 1498 due to disease, food shortages, and conflicts with the indigenous Taíno population. Today, the park serves as a significant monument to early colonial history and houses a museum displaying artifacts such as ceramics and tools from the founding period. The ruins offer a unique glimpse into medieval Spanish architecture and the initial attempts at European colonization in the Caribbean. The park symbolizes the beginning of permanent cultural exchange between Europe and the Americas.
