Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada, located in Southwestern Ontario on the south bank of the Detroit River, directly across from Detroit, Michigan. Established in 1749 as a French agricultural settlement, it remains the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in Canada west of Montreal. During the early 20th century, the city evolved into the primary hub for the Canadian automotive industry, earning it the title of the "Automotive Capital of Canada." Windsor is a critical gateway for international trade, with the Ambassador Bridge handling approximately one-quarter of all trade between Canada and the United States. Historically, the area was a significant site during the War of 1812 and later served as a major terminal on the Underground Railroad for African Americans seeking freedom. Modern Windsor is a diverse multicultural community with an economy supported by manufacturing, tourism through the Caesars Windsor casino, and higher education via the University of Windsor. Its geographic position provides a relatively mild climate compared to the rest of the country, supporting a robust wine industry in the surrounding Essex County. Windsor Castle remained an active royal residence in 2024-25 as King Charles III continued treatment for a cancer diagnosis announced in February 2024, gradually resuming public engagements through the year. Public access to State Apartments was adjusted accordingly.
