Kitchener sits at the heart of Waterloo Region in southwestern Ontario and forms, together with neighboring Waterloo and Cambridge, the densely populated Tri-City area. Until 1916 the city was called Berlin, but its name was changed during the First World War in honor of British Field Marshal Lord Kitchener. The city has a strong German immigrant heritage, celebrated each October at Oktoberfest, the second-largest event of its kind in the world after Munich. Economically, Kitchener is part of a major innovation corridor that includes technology companies such as Google, OpenText, and Shopify, complemented by the University of Waterloo.
