Guelph lies in southern Ontario, about 100 kilometers west of Toronto, along the Speed River. With around 145,000 residents, the city is known for its high quality of life and low crime rate, regularly ranking among Canada's safest cities. Guelph was planned in 1827 by Scottish writer John Galt and named after the royal House of Welf (in English 'Guelph'). The University of Guelph is one of North America's leading institutions for agricultural and veterinary studies and shapes the local culture profoundly. The economy is dominated by food processing, insurance, and high technology. The Gothic Revival Church of Our Lady Immaculate is a landmark of the city.
