Greater Sudbury lies in northern Ontario and, with around 165,000 residents, is the largest city in Ontario by area. It was founded in the late 19th century when construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway revealed enormous nickel and copper ore deposits, the legacy of a 1.8-billion-year-old meteorite impact that formed the Sudbury Basin. Today the region produces about ten percent of the world's nickel. Vale and Glencore operate the largest smelters and refineries here. The city's iconic landmark is the Big Nickel, a five-cent coin sculpture beside the Dynamic Earth museum. Laurentian University and Science North shape the scientific life.
