Markham, located in York Region just north of Toronto, is regarded as 'Canada's High-Tech Capital' and hosts the highest concentration of high-technology companies in the country. The city was founded in 1794 by William Berczy and was originally an agricultural settlement of German immigrants. Geographically, Markham spans fertile farmland within the watersheds of the Rouge River and the Don River. Historically, the village of Unionville, now a part of Markham, is famous for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture. Today, over 1,500 high-tech and life science companies, including IBM, AMD, and Honda Canada, maintain their headquarters or significant operations in Markham. The city is also known for its vast ethnic diversity, particularly its large Asian-Canadian community. With the Markham Museum and the annual Markham Fair, the city preserves its historical agricultural roots despite rapid urbanization.
