Fort Malden (Canada)

Weather…

Fort Malden in Amherstburg, Ontario, is a historic military fortification that played a vital role during the strategic conflicts between British and American forces. Established by the British in 1795 to replace Fort Detroit, it served as a major base during the War of 1812. From this location, British troops and Indigenous allies led by Tecumseh launched their successful attack on Detroit. Following the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, the British destroyed the fort and retreated, leading to American occupation until the end of the war. The fort was rebuilt afterwards and later played a role in defending against the Rebellions of 1837-1838. Between 1859 and 1870, the site served a different purpose as a provincial asylum for the insane. Today, Fort Malden is recognized as a National Historic Site managed by Parks Canada, featuring original earthworks and restored military buildings. It provides a detailed look into 19th-century military life and the complex history of the Canadian-American border.
