Mount Rundle (Canada)

Weather…

Mount Rundle is one of Canada's most iconic and frequently photographed mountains, located within Banff National Park in Alberta. Rising to an elevation of 2,948 meters, it forms a massive ridge extending 12 kilometers between the towns of Banff and Canmore. The mountain is renowned for its distinctive wedge-like shape, created by the tectonic uplifting and tilting of Paleozoic sedimentary rock layers. Geologically, it consists primarily of limestone and shale from the Rundle Group. The first recorded ascent was made in 1888 by James J. McArthur. It was named after Robert Rundle, a Methodist missionary who served in the region during the 1840s. While the western slopes provide a popular yet strenuous hiking route, the northern face presents a near-vertical wall that looms over the Bow River valley.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The mountain is located directly adjacent to the town of Banff, with the main scramble route starting near the Bow Falls or the local golf course.
📅
Best season
The brief summer window from late June to early September is the only safe time for the scramble, as snow and ice make the route highly dangerous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The route begins as a steep forested trail before transitioning into a very long, exposed, and physically exhausting scree slope with some moderate scrambling.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with excellent ankle support, a helmet to protect against rockfall, and plenty of water are essential for the long, exposed ascent.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors can typically park at the designated lots near the Bow Falls trailhead or take the local Roam transit bus to avoid parking issues entirely.
⚠️
Safety
Rockfall is a significant hazard on the upper slopes; always check the weather forecast, as the exposed ridge is extremely dangerous during thunderstorms.
⏱️
Time needed
The complete scramble to the main summit and back is a strenuous full-day effort, typically taking anywhere from seven to ten hours for fit hikers.
