Lethbridge is the third-largest city in Alberta, located in the southwestern portion of the province along the coulees of the Oldman River. Established in the late 19th century as a coal-mining settlement, it eventually evolved into a vital commercial and agricultural hub for the surrounding prairie region. The city's most recognizable landmark is the Lethbridge Viaduct, commonly known as the High Level Bridge; completed in 1909, it remains one of the longest and highest steel trestle bridges in the world. Lethbridge is known for its high number of sunshine hours and the frequent Chinook winds that provide respite from the harsh Canadian winters. Cultural highlights include the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, established in 1967 to commemorate the centennial of the Canadian Confederation and the bonds between the local community and Japan. Today, Lethbridge is a center for higher education and research, anchored by the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College, while serving as a gateway to the nearby Canadian Rockies and Waterton Lakes National Park.
