Banff National Park
Banff National Park, established in 1885, stands as Canada's inaugural national park and a cornerstone of the nation's environmental conservation efforts. Located in the Alberta Rocky Mountains, it encompasses over 6,641 square kilometers of rugged terrain, ranging from subalpine forests to alpine tundra and icefields. The park's origins are deeply tied to the discovery of the Cave and Basin thermal springs, which prompted the federal government to create a protected reserve to prevent private exploitation. This decision marked the beginning of Canada's national park system. Today, Banff is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks. Its geological composition is primarily sedimentary rock, including limestone and shale, which were thrust upwards during the Laramide Orogeny between 80 and 55 million years ago. Visitors are drawn to the iconic peaks of Mount Rundle and Castle Mountain, while the turquoise waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake provide striking contrasts against the gray stone. The park supports a diverse ecosystem, providing critical habitat for large mammals such as grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, and the endangered woodland caribou. The Icefields Parkway, often cited as one of the world's most scenic drives, traverses the park, linking it to Jasper National Park and offering views of the massive Columbia Icefield. The balance between maintaining a world-class tourism destination and preserving the ecological integrity of the wilderness remains the park's primary management challenge.
