Grande Prairie is a rapidly growing city in northwestern Alberta, serving as the commercial and service heart of the Peace River Country region. Originally a settlement area for the Cree and Beaver Indigenous peoples, it was formally established in the early 20th century and saw explosive growth following the arrival of the railway and the development of the oil and gas sectors. The city is named for the large, fertile prairie on which it sits, an anomaly in a region otherwise dominated by boreal forest. Grande Prairie is famously known as the 'Swan City' because it provides a vital nesting ground for the trumpeter swan, a species that was once near extinction. Cultural and scientific interest in the area is high due to the nearby Pipestone Creek bonebed, one of the densest dinosaur fossil sites in the world, now commemorated by the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. As a regional service center, Grande Prairie attracts people from across northern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia for its extensive shopping, healthcare, and educational facilities like Northwestern Polytechnic.
