Gladden Spit Whale Shark Grounds (Belize)

Weather…

The Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve is located about 36 kilometers off the coast of Placencia and is world-renowned for the annual congregation of whale sharks. Between the months of March and June, these gentle giants visit the area, attracted by the mass spawning of snappers during the full moon. Geographically, the reserve is characterized by a deep cut in the barrier reef that brings nutrient-rich water from the depths to the surface. Whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, can be observed here by divers and snorkelers in a controlled environment, making Gladden Spit a premier destination for ecotourism. Established in 1999, the protected area covers approximately 10,000 hectares and protects not only the whale sharks but also the fragile coral ecosystems of the Silk Cayes. Management is carried out in close cooperation with local communities to ensure sustainable use of marine resources and the protection of biodiversity.
